After nearly a week of hazy skies and warnings, fresh air is finally returning to the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has officially canceled the air quality alert that gripped the state for a record-breaking six days. It is a massive relief for residents who have dealt with some of the worst pollution levels seen in any major city globally during this period. Monday brings lighter winds and much clearer views as high temperatures settle comfortably into the upper 70s and lower 80s. While most of eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin will enjoy dry and partly sunny conditions, this reprieve is arriving just in time for people to open their windows and breathe easy again.
However, the break from smoke is unfortunately brief for our neighbors in the north. Officials have already issued a new alert taking effect early Tuesday morning for areas including Two Harbors, Hibbing, and Duluth. This specific warning indicates air will be unhealthy for sensitive groups until Wednesday noon, so those in the Arrowhead region should keep their masks handy. Meanwhile, the rest of the state is trading one weather challenge for another: humidity. As the week progresses, moisture will surge back into the atmosphere. Wednesday will feel noticeably stickier, and by Thursday, we could see the heat index climbing significantly as temperatures threaten to break the ninety-degree mark.
The shift in weather patterns also brings a return of precipitation chances mid-week. Western and central Minnesota could see spotty showers and isolated storms developing overnight Wednesday. While rainfall totals are not expected to be heavy—likely capping out at around half an inch in most spots—it is enough to keep things damp. The real story remains the building heat heading into the weekend. With muggy conditions locking in for Thursday and Friday, it is the perfect excuse to stay cool indoors and maybe experiment with a new refreshing summer salad recipe to beat the heat. Stay hydrated and check back for updates on storm timing as we get closer to Friday.
