The Minneapolis Police Department has provided crucial updates regarding the horrific incident at the Church of the Annunciation, confirming the toll of the tragedy as the community struggles to comprehend the violence. According to the latest reports, twenty-one individuals were injured by gunfire during the attack on Wednesday morning. The victims include eighteen children between the ages of six and fifteen, as well as three elderly parishioners in their eighties who were attending Mass. Tragically, two young students, aged eight and ten, lost their lives in the shooting. As investigators continue their work, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the identities of the deceased when appropriate.

Shooter Blocked Exits As City Ramps Up Security For Schools

Chilling new details have emerged about the attack, revealing the shooter’s deliberate attempts to maximize harm. Police recovered one hundred and sixteen rifle casings, three shotgun shells, and a live pistol round from the scene. Surveillance footage confirmed the shooter fired from outside and even attempted to barricade a door to prevent people from escaping. Fortunately, the church’s practice of locking doors once Mass began likely prevented the attacker from entering, averting an even worse catastrophe. In response, the city has launched a massive security effort. Officers from St. Paul, Hennepin County, and the State Patrol are now deployed in two-person squads to protect schools and places of worship across Minneapolis.

Community Rallies With Mental Health Support And Donations

As the city grieves, a wave of support is rising to help the affected families and the broader community heal. The Minneapolis Foundation has set up a dedicated fund, allowing the public to donate directly by texting “ACF1” to 41444. Meanwhile, the city has launched a specialized webpage offering mental health resources and advice for parents on how to discuss this tragedy with their children. Governor Tim Walz has ordered all state flags to fly at half-staff to honor the victims. While the investigation into a motive continues with search warrants executed across the metro, officials emphasize that the most impactful way to help right now is through financial support for the victims and their families.
