Tense Standoff Erupts Between ICE Agents And Residents In South Minneapolis

A tense afternoon unfolded in South Minneapolis as federal immigration officers and local residents clashed near Lake Street and Pillsbury Avenue. The confrontation began when residents noticed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducting an operation close to Karmel Mall. Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as shouts and whistles filled the air, drawing more people into the area. Some onlookers said they saw individuals being restrained on the ground as the growing crowd demanded their release. The incident quickly escalated, with people throwing snow and law enforcement stepping in to control the situation while communication between residents and officers remained strained.

Minneapolis police units and Hennepin County Sheriff’s deputies later arrived after receiving reports that federal personnel were being surrounded. The sheriff’s office stated its deputies were asked for assistance around 1 p.m. but did not observe any active assaults against agents. Deputies said their priority was to ensure that federal officers could exit safely as a large crowd blocked vehicles from leaving the area. Authorities stressed that no arrests were made and no chemical irritants or force were deployed by local deputies. The office also reiterated its stance that it does not take part in civil immigration enforcement activities coordinated by federal agencies.

Witnesses described the scene as tense and confusing, with many residents unsure of what was happening or why the operation was taking place in their neighborhood. According to several bystanders, pepper spray or similar deterrents were reportedly used to disperse the crowd at one point. Some people helped each other rinse their eyes as they retreated from the street. The confrontation caused traffic disruptions and drew attention from community members and local representatives, some of whom expressed concern over the visible escalation between residents and federal agents in a busy neighborhood area.

Federal officials have not released detailed information about the objective of the operation or how many individuals were detained. The Department of Homeland Security has previously noted that its agents have faced growing pushback during enforcement actions across the region. Karmel Mall, a well-known hub for Minneapolis’ Somali community, is located nearby and has become a symbol of the city’s cultural diversity. The incident has fueled ongoing discussions around federal immigration policies and the response of local law enforcement agencies during such operations in urban areas.
