Nearly a dozen people were forced from their homes after a late night fire at an apartment building in South Minneapolis, leaving the structure temporarily unfit to live in. Fire crews were dispatched just before midnight to the 2400 block of Dupont Avenue South after reports of smoke and flickering lights inside the building, prompting a full response to check for potential electrical or structural hazards. Firefighters encountered thick smoke on the second floor and began opening interior walls and ceilings, where they discovered active flames that had spread out of sight, requiring an extensive overhaul to fully put out the fire and check for lingering hot spots.
According to the Minneapolis Fire Department, the building’s power was shut off after the blaze was extinguished, and the structure was declared uninhabitable until repairs and safety inspections can be completed. Officials say 11 residents were displaced by the incident, and the Red Cross was requested to provide immediate assistance and temporary support to three adults affected by the loss of housing. No serious injuries have been reported so far, but residents were unable to return to their units overnight as crews ensured the scene was safe and monitored for any potential flare ups in the damaged areas of the building.
