If you have stepped outside recently and noticed that hazy, campfire smell lingering in the air, you are definitely not imagining things. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has officially extended an air quality alert that impacts a huge swath of our state, stretching from the northern border down into central Minnesota. This alert remains active until Monday morning, July 21st, as thick smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift southward. It is settling heavily over cities like Brainerd, Bemidji, and Duluth, creating conditions that are not just unpleasant to look at but genuinely hazardous to breathe for everyone, regardless of health status.
The situation is serious enough that air quality levels are hitting the “red” category on the index in many areas. This designation means the air is considered unhealthy for absolutely everyone, not just those with pre-existing conditions. Fine particle pollution is currently high enough to cause irritation in your eyes, nose, and throat, and might even lead to shortness of breath if you are active outdoors. If you live in or near the Tribal Nations of Mille Lacs, Leech Lake, or White Earth, you should be taking extra precautions right now. It is a good weekend to skip the long jog and maybe settle in with a classic family recipe indoors where the air is filtered and safe.
Looking ahead, there is some relief on the horizon, but patience is required. Meteorologists explain that southerly winds will eventually kick in on Monday, helping to push this thick blanket of smoke back north and out of our region. Until then, however, experts strongly advise minimizing your time outside. If you fall into a sensitive group—such as having asthma, heart conditions, or being pregnant—it is critical to avoid outdoor exertion entirely. Even healthy adults should take it easy and keep windows closed to prevent that smoky haze from entering your home. Stay safe, check on your neighbors, and keep an eye on local forecasts as we wait for the skies to clear up.
