Springfield, Illinois, is hosting the 11th annual Miles of Possibility Route 66 Conference from Oct. 8 through Oct. 11. The centennial edition includes two full days of programming and workshops, along with evening events and a keynote from Jerry McClanahan, author of the EZ 66 Guide. It offers a more history-focused way to celebrate the highway, bringing travelers, historians and enthusiasts together around the road’s legacy.

Barstow, California, is bringing the Mother Road into the heart of its downtown with the Main Street USA Centennial Festival on Oct. 9 and 10. The free celebration is built around the combination that has defined Route 66 for generations: cars, culture, music and community. It is a fitting setting because the highway’s appeal has always extended beyond pavement, with local businesses, roadside attractions and town centers forming much of its character.

Classic cars get their own Route 66 centennial spotlight in downtown San Bernardino on Oct. 10. The 13th annual Rendezvous Back to Route 66 Car Show runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is free to attend. Along with the vehicles, the event features music and community activities. The celebration taps directly into the road’s long association with automobiles and the freedom of the American road trip.

Kingman, Arizona, is hosting a free two-day Route 66 Fest on Oct. 16 and 17, with plenty of the colorful energy that has long surrounded the highway. Visitors can expect live music, Route 66 displays, vendors, live art and a pinup contest. The mix reflects the road’s enduring appeal, which has always combined transportation with entertainment, distinctive local businesses and the visual style of classic American roadside culture.

Route 66 West Fest adds another automotive-focused celebration to the centennial calendar, combining live music, food trucks, vendors and a lowrider car exhibit. That combination feels particularly appropriate for a highway whose identity was shaped by the people who stopped along it, ate at its diners and motels, and turned ordinary roadside stops into memorable destinations. The centennial celebrations are helping reconnect those traditions with today’s travelers.

Albuquerque’s centennial celebration leans into two of Route 66’s most recognizable visual traditions: automobiles and neon. Chrome & Neon at 100 brings together classic cars, music and food, while also incorporating a Hubcap Tree photo opportunity, a time capsule, a neon-lighting ceremony and a cruise to a new neon park. A Neon Cruise along Albuquerque’s 18-mile stretch of Route 66 adds another layer, highlighting one of the longest urban portions of the historic highway still intact.

Some centennial celebrations are about staying in one place, while The Long Way Home makes the journey itself the attraction. Three American cars from the 1960s are traveling the final 1,990 miles of Route 66, from St. Louis to Santa Monica, as part of a centennial project. The journey is scheduled to conclude with a public display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, giving the historic road trip a distinctly automotive finale.

The series looks at people and places that helped turn Route 66 into a national icon while using the road to explore broader American history and mythology.
